We started around 3.5 months gradually weaning away the paci with rocking, then we started shortening the time we rocked, then we moved onto pat/shush in the crib. I mentioned the shush-pat method in a previous sleep training post. Once that happens, you can slow down your patting rhythm. Persevere for 3-5 minutes with the patting and shushing before picking your baby up for a big cuddle to help them get calm and ready for sleep again. We have been using a pretty gradual approach to sleep training. The Baby Whisperer says to continue to do the shush pat for 7-10 minutes after baby has calmed down. Increase the intensity and speed of your patting to match your baby’s crying to try and help calm your baby. With the other arm you are going to rhythmically pat their back. Once they’re nice and drowsy, place them in their bassinet with their feet towards your stomach, and roll them onto their side supporting them with one of your arms.
